Sailability setting the standard on equality at sea • Live Sail Die

Finn Drummond is one of Live Sail Die’s savvy media boat drivers. He’s a vibrant, multi-talented individual who also works as a sail maker, and a passionate coach for Sailability Auckland. Here we hear from Finn on the inspirational sailors who stop at nothing to get on the water:
“Last weekend, we had the 2019 New Zealand Hansa Nationals in Tauranga. We had a nice breeze averaging 13-15 knots during the 8 races.
Some people have never heard of Sailability or know very little of what Sailability is about. Sailability was established in 1991 with the aim of providing people with disabilities, to get out there and enjoy our backyard harbour as much as most Kiwis do!

Hansa is the association that has provided many different designs of boats which are purpose-built for people with disabilities. These boats are designed to accommodate all disabled sailors and can be altered to fit crew onboard. We sail in two main categories – servo (either full or partial electric systems) and manual.

I want to highlight one of our very talented sailors, Mke. Mke is a sailor with Sailability Auckland & Sailability Hawkes Bay, she is sailing a Liberty in the full servo division. Mke has severe Cerebral Palsy, which has left her wheelchair bound. She has a very talented foot and with that foot she controls everything in the boat! Steve, our wonder man at Sailability, has built a system with a joystick and switches that Mke can use from her big toe, controlling everything on the boat she needs. That is the mainsheet winch, jib winch and steering! She is out there sailing and competing incredibly well thanks to Sailability.

Sailability is an epic organization that helps people just like Mke get out there and enjoy the sport that many of us take for granted!  There are people out there with two times the ability, that sit on their backside and can’t find anything to do! Sailing is a sport we can all do year round. You can be any type of person, with any ability, to get out on to the water! Nothing is stopping you, literally nothing!

I would also like to say some congrats from the 2019 Nationals! Congrats Tony Vaka, for winning not only the Liberty Class but also the Kiwi Cup! Your hard work has paid off! I would also like to congratulate Pauline Chamberlains for winning the 303 Single!! And Caleb Evens and Alistair Eagleson for winning the 303 Doubles.”
